HEALTH AND WELFARE INFORMATION for AGREEMENT EMPLOYEES


The National Railway Labor Conference oversees the national benefit plans for railroad personnel who are represented by labor organizations. The benefits provided under all of the Plans result from collective bargaining. If you work for a participating railroad and are represented by a participating labor organization, you may be covered by one or more of the national benefit plans.

The Railroad Employees National Health and Welfare Plan (formerly GA23000) - This Plan provides health benefits, mental health and substance abuse coverage, prescription drug benefits, and life insurance and accidental death and dismemberment coverage to most of the agreement employees on the freight railroads in the United States.

The Railroad Employees National Health and Welfare Plan described below provides different benefits for certain employees represented by the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employes.

The Railroad Employees National Health and Welfare Plan described below provides different benefits for certain employees represented by the Transportation Communications International Union, TCIU (Brotherhood Railway Carmen Division), and Transport Workers Union.

The National Railway Carriers and United Transportation Union Health and Welfare Plan - This Plan provides health benefits, mental health and substance abuse coverage, prescription drug benefits, and life insurance and accidental death and dismemberment coverage to United Transportation Union workers on the Burlington Northern Santa Fe, CSX Transportation, Kansas City Southern, Norfolk Southern, and Union Pacific railroads.

The Railroad Employees National Early Retirement Major medical Benefit Plan (formerly GA-46000) This Plan provides limited medical benefits to qualifying retirees between the ages of 61 and 65.

The Railroad Employees National Dental Plan provides two levels of benefits; most employees currently receive the higher level of benefits; both levels are outlined in the booklet.

The Railroad Employees National Vision Plan provides vision benefits at two levels. The Value Plan which covers most railroad employees is outlined in the booklet “Railroad Employees National Vision Plan 1999.” If your organization has negotiated the Standard Plan (currently only BMWE) then the vision benefits are outlined in the booklet “Railroad Employees National Vision Plan VSP Standard Network Benefits Effective January 1, 2002.”

The Supplemental Sickness Benefit Plan covering Maintenance of Way Employees - short term disability benefits

The Supplemental Sickness Benefit Plan Covering Yardmasters - short term disability benefits

Some Canadian employees of US railroads have coverage which is supplemental to the provincial government benefits. These benefits are administered by the Maritime Life Assurance Company and include supplementary health, life and accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and dental coverage.
